SIM, eSIM & Wi-Fi at Narita Airport
How to get your phone online right after landing, with where and when you can get a SIM or pocket Wi-Fi at the airport.

Locations and hours by terminal
All SIM sales and Wi-Fi rentals are in the area before departure procedures. On arrival, that is the arrivals lobby after customs (only the four vending machines on T2 Main Building 2F are before immigration). There are none after departure security.
Where no hours are shown, the airport's list does not give them.

Terminal 3 has few options. If you want a specific provider, get your SIM at Terminal 1 or 2.
How to connect to the free Wi-Fi (FreeWiFi-NARITA)
- Turn on Wi-Fi in your settings and choose FreeWiFi-NARITA
- On the login screen that opens automatically, accept the terms of use and security notes
It works in all areas of every terminal and on the inter-terminal shuttle bus. It is not encrypted, so use a VPN for anything sensitive. It can be slow or hard to connect when busy.
Common mistakes
- The phone is carrier-locked, so the SIM or eSIM you bought does not work
- Arriving after 21:00 and finding the counters closed (check JAL ABC on 1F or a vending machine)
- Trying to buy a SIM after departure security on your way home (there are no shops after security)

How can I get online right after landing?

Until what time are the SIM counters open?
Most counters are open 7:00–21:00. JAL ABC on T1 North/South Wing 1F and T2 1F opens at 6:30 and stays open until 1 hour after the last international arrival. Rakuten Mobile on T1 Central 4F is open 8:00–20:00.
Can I buy one at the airport when leaving Japan?
SIM sales and Wi-Fi rentals are only in the area before departure procedures. There are none after immigration and security, so do it before check-in.
My phone is carrier-locked.
You need an unlocked phone to use a Japanese SIM or eSIM. Ask your carrier before you travel. If it cannot be unlocked, rent a pocket Wi-Fi at an airport counter.
Is the free Wi-Fi safe?
FreeWiFi-NARITA is not encrypted so that anyone can connect easily. The airport recommends a VPN for anything like card numbers or passwords.
