Arrival Guide — Your First Steps at Narita

Here's everything you need to do from the moment you land to getting on your way to your destination.

Step-by-Step

  1. ① Immigration
Foreign visitors: join the staffed counters. Japanese nationals use the automated gates.
Busy periods (Golden Week, summer holidays, New Year) can mean 30–60 min waits.
Pre-register on Visit Japan Web to speed things up. It handles both immigration and customs.
  2. ② Baggage Claim
Find the carousel for your flight number and collect your bags. If bags don't arrive, go straight to the Baggage Service counter before leaving the hall.
  3. ③ Customs
Take the green lane (Nothing to Declare) if you have nothing to declare. If you pre-registered on Visit Japan Web, use the electronic customs terminal.
  4. ④ SIM / eSIM
You need a connection. Options in the Arrivals hall: IIJmio, Rakuten Mobile, SoftBank and others.
Best pick: Buy an eSIM before your flight (from your home country). Activate it as soon as you land — no counter, no queue.
  5. ⑤ Cash
Japan is still cash-heavy. Best rates:
    • Japan Post Bank / 7-Bank ATMs in the Arrivals hall — accept Visa/Mastercard, good exchange rate
    • Currency exchange counters — convenient but higher fees. OK for small amounts.
  6. ⑥ Choose Your Transport
Head to the train, bus or taxi that fits your budget and destination. See the Transport Guide for fares and comparisons.

FAQ

Can I buy a SIM card at Narita Airport?

Yes. IIJmio, Rakuten Mobile, SoftBank and others have counters in the Arrivals hall. Best option: buy an eSIM online before your flight — activate it the moment you land, no queue needed.

Where should I exchange money?

Japan Post Bank and 7-Bank ATMs in the Arrivals hall accept most international cards at better rates than exchange counters. Use ATMs for larger amounts; counters are fine for small sums.
