Narita Airport Arrival Guide for Families | Strollers, Nursing Rooms & Transport

What this page covers: Smooth arrival procedures for families with children and the best transport options

For: Families with infants or toddlers, parents using strollers, group travelers with children

In a nutshell

With young children at Narita, use the family lane at immigration and choose N'EX or a taxi for the easiest journey. Send heavy luggage ahead by courier so you can manage the stroller hands-free.

Steps (~2 hrs)

  1. Step 1 Disembark & head to immigration

Change diapers on the plane or in the terminal baby room before joining the immigration queue. Narita is large — if you checked your stroller, it may be returned at the gate or at baggage claim. Confirm with your airline in advance.

💡 Some immigration counters have a 'family lane' or 'priority lane for passengers with children.' Ask a staff member to direct you.

  2. Step 2 Immigration (use the family lane)

With young children, staff can guide you to a priority lane. Young children are exempt from fingerprinting (below a certain age). Present all family members' passports together. Strollers can pass through the security zone.

  3. Step 3 Baggage claim & stroller retrieval

Compact strollers usually appear on the regular baggage carousel. Large strollers or oversized items go to the Oversized Baggage counter. Ask a staff member if unsure.

💡 If your stroller arrives damaged, report it immediately at the baggage claim counter before leaving the area.

  4. Step 4 Customs & exit

If you have nothing to declare, use the green lane (Nothing to Declare). One family member can submit a single declaration form for the whole group. Once through customs, you're in the arrivals hall.

  5. Step 5 Baby care (nursing, feeding, nappy change)

Each terminal has a nursing room (baby room) near the arrivals hall. Nappy changing tables are in most toilets. Take care of the children's needs before tackling transport — no rush is key for family travel.

💡 Narita's nursing rooms are clean and well-equipped. Check the terminal map or ask staff for the nearest one.

  6. Step 6 SIM, currency exchange, and luggage

Pick up a SIM card and change money in the arrivals hall. With heavy luggage, use the courier desk (Yamato/Sagawa) to send bags to your hotel for next-day delivery. Traveling hands-free is significantly easier with children.

  7. Step 7 Choose family-friendly transport

Priority order for families with luggage: ① Taxi/private car (door-to-door, luggage OK, predictable time), ② N'EX (reserved seats, luggage racks, no transfer), ③ Limousine bus (luggage trunk, spacious seats). Crowded trains with strollers are best avoided.

💡 For a group of 3–4, a taxi can be more cost-effective than the train. A pre-booked hired car gives a confirmed price.

Important Notes

  • Trains during rush hour (8–9am, 5–7pm) are extremely difficult with strollers and heavy luggage.
  • The Skyliner requires a transfer at Nippori for the Yamanote Line. With a stroller and bags, this can be very challenging in a crowd.
  • The N'EX is fully reserved — purchase tickets at machines right after arrival, or pre-book online.
  • Courier delivery is next-day. Pack a day's worth of clothes, nappies, and formula in your carry-on.

FAQ

Where are nursing rooms at Narita Airport?

Each terminal has nursing rooms (baby rooms) near the arrivals and departures areas. Nappy tables are in most toilets. Check the terminal map or ask staff.

What is the best transport for families with young children from Narita?

A taxi or hired car is the easiest — door-to-door with luggage. For 3–4 people it can be cost-effective too. If using trains, N'EX is the most family-friendly with reserved seats and luggage racks. Avoid busy commuter trains with a stroller.

Can I bring a stroller on trains in Japan?

Yes. Strollers can board almost all trains. On crowded commuter trains, folding the stroller is expected etiquette. N'EX has more space and is stroller-friendly.

How long does it take to get from Narita to a Tokyo hotel with children?

Allow 1–2 hours for immigration, baggage claim, and customs. Then ~53 min by N'EX to central Tokyo. Budget 2.5–3 hours from touchdown to hotel check-in.
